Sorry, you can’t Bach here

A concerted campaign is under way to restore the site of Bach’s house in Weimar to its former glory. The spot where, from 1708-17, the great man filled the air with counterpoint and cantatas has today become associated with altogether more mundane sounds, as it serves as the carpark of the Hotel Elephant – Bach’s house was, alas, pulled down in the last throes of the Communist era in 1989. Now, however, Myriam Eichberger, a professor at the city’s Liszt School of Music, is seeking to replace the BMWs with BWVs by buying back the land, uncovering the house’s foundations, rebuilding it and returning the site to its former melodic purpose. With 11,000 supporters, Eichberger’s campaign has built upa head of steam, but is meeting stern resistance from the carpark’s owners, who say that the 70 spaces are invaluable to the Elephantine residents. The Bach vs park dispute looks set to continue..
